John Ewan has a lifetime of writing experience including, writing feature articles, sports reporting and features. He has been in journalism, public relations and advertising. The idea for a book about the Porter family came from assuming that Porters Pass was named for his great grandfather David Porter, Government Surveyor. In fact the story turned out quite differently. David Porter worked mainly on the North Island while two of his brother lived in the Canterbury area and for a time farmed Castle Hill.
