Tanya Doty has been crafting willow baskets from her workshop in Upper Moutere since her first basket making course with Golden Bay basketmaker Peter Greer in 2008. Largely self taught, she is firmly addicted to basket making and spends most of her days bending bundles of cultivated , sustainable willow sticks into baskets. Her baskets are made with respect for tradition and the desire to create enduring practical accessories that compliment home and lifestyle.
She enjoys experimenting with other natural fibres such as raupo, pine needles, rattan, and foraged fibres, bringing a contemporary feel to the age old craft of basket making. Her Blessing Stones, wrapped in rattan and other natural fibres are described as beautiful decor pieces that can be used as a physical reminder to count our blessings and remind us of our connections to earth and nature.
She has completed many commissioned pieces and welcomes the interactions and exploration of techniques that come with commissions.
